In my independent reading book, Dark Dude by Oscar Hijuelos. The main character Rico lives in Harlem, and the environment there isn't really an environment that would influence a person. Kids that live in Harlem would make fun of Rico, because his light skin and Hispanic. This book probably takes place in a different time period, cause there is segregation in this book. Anyways the environment Rico lives in affects him and his life.
The environment in Harlem isn't an environment you would want to be influence by. This is why it affects Rico and his choice of decisions in life. One example would be, where Rico lives all the young kids from maybe ages 15-19 years old do drugs/smoke and drink alcohol. One of Rico's closes friend name Jimmy does heroine. Jimmy took Rico to go get some heroine from a leader of a gang. When Rico witness Jimmy poking himself with a needle(inside the needle is heroine), Rico was in shock. Jimmy asked Rico if he wanted some, Rico said no man cause he new it was wrong to do. Sometimes he thinks twice about doing something because he just wants to fit in with people and stop getting made fun of. At the same time he knows that he shouldn't be doing the things he isn't suppose to be doing. He also doesn't want to disappoint is mom and dad.
Another example of the environment affecting Rico is, while Rico was going home from school he got beat up. These bunch of kids came up to him and told him give me all your money. After they took Rico's money they punched and kicked him to the ground, they also stepped on his glasses. Rico was really tired and annoyed of people making fun him. He was thinking of moving to Wisconsin and leaving Harlem but then he thought, he would miss his mom, father and younger sister. Rico still thinks about moving there but he resists to. Those were examples of how the environment that Rico lives in affects him and his decisions in life.
In conclusion, Rico lives in an environment that you wouldn't want to be influence by. This affects Rico and his choice of decisions, because he just wants to fit in with the people around him. At the same time Rico knows that it's wrong to follow the footsteps of the people around him, because he knows it's wrong and he doesn't want to disappoint his mom or dad.
Found it! Haha! Anyway, I think your post was awesome because you included examples of how the environment affects Rico and his decisions. The conclusion was an overall summary of your essay, and the essay in general had a lot of voice. Nice Job!
ReplyDeleteYay! I found it too. I liked how you included the type of environment that Rico lives in, and how he tries to not be influenced by the things that go on around him. Good response.
